In his defense

Copied from my MySpace blog. Originally posted August 28, 2006.

So, it's hurricane season again. Fingers crossed for less death and destruction than last year.

You hear a lot about how President Bush was warned that the levees in New Orleans would not be able to hold back the flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina, which would leave many homeless and kill others. They say that he just simply ignored the warnings, rather than try to help.

I say give the guy a break. I can't imagine that he would have just ignored those warnings. He can't be that heartless, can he?

I think I've come up with what probably happened. And I think it's time to clear the President's name. I think that he did listen to the warnings. And I think he did put together an action plan to try to save lives in New Orleans.

But then, after he left the meeting, headed back to the White House, he turned on his favourite radio station. There, he heard a commentator, whose opinion he trusted a great deal, say that he himself had taken his Chevy to the levee and the levee was dry. So the President figured that the crisis was averted and canceled the mission to get people out of harm's way.

It's the only explanation I can come up with.

The problem was not the levee itself but the pilings depth. It was the ground underneath. The levee itself just gave way and collapsed from underneath, not from water going over it.

What do I look like? A weatherman? Katrina caused flooding in New Orleans. Or so the news thingy said. Maybe it was the joke news. If so, disregard this blog post.

I can see Bush driving his Chevy to the levee and thinking it's dry so he shouldn't do anything about it...

an enteresting theory, theroizable but not plausible. We have agencies upon agencies entertwined within the goverment that passes on info and the needs and crisis's which may become of the people. The weather stations,NOAA and other newscasts reported the entensity of the storm in its gathering,,now no one, outside of the possible gruops(another theory on the breaks,,but not proven) would have known they would fail,,but speculation on the entensity of the storm, would have set forth common sense of possible destruction that warranted closer observation w/ intent of backup.

I recognize all of those letters, but, when you put them together in that order, I don't really understand. Maybe try to re-organize them?

I could have knocked over those levees with a stone.

You know the old saying. Those who live near glass levees shouldn't throw stones.

Or something like that.

Was it the President that caused that disaster or perhaps all that Rain and Wind?

There's so many "could'ves" that could prevented the humanitarian disaster:

Louisiana's Governor COULD'VE dedicated ALL of the assets of the Louisiana's available national guard before and after the disaster.

The Mayor of New Orleans COULD'VE used the 400+ bus public transportation fleet to help in the evacuation before AND after.

The Congressmen and women as well as Louisiana's Senators COULD'VE refrained from cutting the budgets of the levee system instead of using that money to reward campaign contributors.

Why are all these "could've's" left out of our media's assesment of why things went wrong? The majority of the people responsible happen to be Democrats from Louisiana! The media also seems to beleive that most Americans don't understand how our Government works and that things like levee systems and evacuation efforts are local and state government issues, long before they are federal.

ok im from new orleans and i was there , but before i go into it i want to say this. im only joining this group because i think colleen is hot. now having said that i will go into this disaster thing.

the buses were used to evacuate prior to the hurricane it was announced on the radio that they were using them to move people unfortunatly it was to the superdome. i guess that is better than being on the roof of your house but they were used. as for the governement , anyone that is still expecting the government to be accountable or reliable for anything is about as smart as the mold growing on my living room wall.

there are many stories comming out of this and most are partial truths. cnn is only telling the rating getting portion of the story. and for the one that posted the hurricane didnt hit louisiana , check it out. look for plaquimines parish , st bernard parish , and st tammany parish. ever heard of slidell , la. look at the pics of my house and tell me it didnt hit louisiana

I think KC & Tommy got it right when they are talking about the failure on a local level to get things done correctly. Lets look at this from a national perspective first. Does any stae want the Feds to come in and just take over, before or after a disaster. NO! So don't blame the Feds or Bush because the feds didn't come in and tell NO to evacuate or we arrest you.

Second, lets look at who does have responsibility to take care of a state's business. 1. The governor and 2. state legislators. They did not order a mandatory evacuation of NO.

Third, who is responsible for the city, the mayor and elected counil members. They evacuated everyone to the Superdome.

What fucking idiots would order an evacuation to the Superdome? The City of New Orleans of course. Yes, buses did bring people to the superdome. But the same buses could have brought them 50 or 100 miles north and out of the below sea level area. But the state and the city continually think in the "We will wait for the Feds to fix it" mind set.

Forth, the citizens are responsible for their own asses. Yes, many could have found a way out on their own but stayed. Many could not find their way out and needed public assistance to do so. When I saw the school busses under 8 feet of water in the school bus yard I knew that the city screwed up by not using them to get the people out.

Why is it that New Orleans is the only city complaining that they were abandoned? Because they abandoned themselves by not being prepared. Mayor Naygin (or however he spells his name) took a part in killing all those people by not offering them a way to leave.

TAKE NOTICE PEOPLE! Be prepared. Do not rely on the government to bail your ass out of every emergency that comes up. Have a plan, have supplies and have a gun, or two or three. When the big disaster hits your neighborhood you need to be self sufficient, not welfare dependant.

I do applaud all those fine people of NO and the surrounding areas that were able to self-evacuate, self-fortify or ride out the storm and survive because they prepared.

jacob before you shoot your mouth , check it out , the hurricane made landfall twice before hitting the coast. the eye passed over plaquimines parish and st bernard parish before hitting the coast and when it did hit the coast it went ashore at hte state line , damaging another part of louisiana called slidell. you may not mean harm but there is enough misinformation about katrina and you shouldnt be decieved or add to it
